In the race of anti virus developers Internet Security suites have emerged on the market to provide users with the most comprehensive security solution.Internet Security suites are designed with utmost protection in mind, to guard all doorways malware might try to your computer.

AVG is a strong name in the anti virus industry, and just like the most important security solution developers on the market, also released an Internet Security suite. The latest version of the suite brings a total of 13 different components, all working for the safety of your computer and your personal data implicitly.

Computer Scanner is the second main menu available in the main application window. Once accessed, you’ll have the possibility to choose between three different types of scans and configure their settings in your best interest. Checking the entire computer for threats could not miss from the list, just like scanning specific files or folders. Both types of scan share the same set of settings, which include enabling automatic removal or healing of infections, reporting potentially unwanted programs and spy ware threats, including tracking cookies in the search, looking inside archives or appealing to heuristics for maximum efficiency. Additionally, you can set the scan process priority to automatic, fast or slow.

The third type of scan available in the menu is specifically designed to discover a particular type of malware, rootkits. There are no supplementary settings available; as a matter of fact, there are no settings at all to fiddle with. But there is the possibility to run it by a user-defined schedule.

You can add as many schedules as you want, set the tasks to run whenever you want and choose the computer locations to be checked.
Moreover, you get to customize the way the scanning goes.

The Good

The installation procedure has been much improved, with a reduced number of steps to go through adding protection to your system. You get to configure the update frequency for the modules relying on malware signatures right from the beginning, so once the schedule is set, you won’t have a problem with this anymore.

All components making up the suite are visible in the main screen of the application, as well as their status and overall protection state. Due to the easy settings available under components’ status overview window and the pre-configured modules, you won’t have too much work to do, unless you want full customization of each component in the suite.

The Bad

Spam training did not work as expected during our testing. Also, fine tuning some modules may not prove to be too user-friendly in some cases, especially when the suite is not shipped with a manual containing thorough explanations for some options and settings.

In the case of Anti-Spam component, its Advanced Settings are not at all suitable for a home user, but a server administrator. Also, the help file does not shed any light for the options of this section, but rather warns that “inappropriate changes may result in bad performance and incorrect component functionality.”

During some scans,the engine putting quite a stress on the CPU.
Installing AVG toolbar comes with Yahoo! as search engine option, kind of imposing it as there is no option to disable the search bar. It gives you the possibility to enable/disable Search-Shield and Active Surf-Shield, but removing it won’t affect these components at all because you will still be able to control them from AVG Internet Security’s main interface.

The lack of a parental control component also needs to be noted.

The Truth

AVG Internet Security 9 will not offer first-class protection against malware, nor does it inconvenience you in any way. It is neither overprotective so as to trouble you with false positives, nor intrusive to ask for your permission each time a new application launches (although you can set it this way).

Abusing computer resources is not at all a regular activity of AVG; on the contrary, it is rather an exception occurring temporarily and which will surely be addressed.

AVG Internet Security showed proficiency in keeping malware off the system, all components pulling together in the same direction and complementing each other. But mixing the suite with the forms of protection that come with one of the supported web browsers and search engines can only lead to a stronger protection layer and lessen the risk of getting the system infected.

Akismet is great at detecting spam, but if you get lots of it then it means trawling through the spam queue in case there are any false positives. One alternative is to use a CAPTCHA - but this isn't very user friendly if every commenter has to complete one.

This plugin provides a CAPTCHA complement to Akismet. If Akismet identifies a comment as spam, it will ask the commenter to complete a simple CAPTCHA. If they fail, then the comment will be automatically discarded (and won't clutter up your spam queue). If they pass, it will be allowed into the spam queue. That way the spam queue will contain only the most likely false positives, making it much easier to find them. Meanwhile, genuine commenters (i.e., those not flagged by Akismet) will be able to comment on your blog hassle-free.

The default CAPTCHA is a simple text-based test. There is also the option to use if you want something more robust (note: this requires getting a free API key). You can also style the page to fit with your own Wordpress theme.
